Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)
Rhinoplasty, also commonly known as “nose surgery,” is a surgical procedure that alters the shape, size, or proportion of the nose. It can be done for both cosmetic or functional purposes, such as to improve nasal breathing or to correct a deformity or injury. The procedure is typically done under general anesthesia and involves reshaping the nose by removing, reducing, or adding cartilage and bone. The surgeon may also make changes to the nose’s internal structures to improve breathing. The techniques used in rhinoplasty can vary depending on the individual’s specific goals and the type of nose they have. This procedure can change the size of the nose, alter the shape of the tip or bridge, narrow the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and the upper lip.
Rhinoplasty to correct a deviated septum
Nose surgery that’s done to improve an obstructed airway requires careful evaluation of the nasal structure as it relates to airflow and breathing.
Correction of a deviated septum, one of the most common causes of breathing impairment, is achieved by adjusting the nasal structure to produce better alignment.
Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?
Good candidates for rhinoplasty are those who are physically healthy, have realistic expectations, and are seeking improvement, not perfection in the appearance of their nose. It’s ideal if the person has completed their facial growth and have a stable mental and emotional state. Patients who have a history of nose injuries, breathing difficulties, congenital defects, or are unhappy with the shape or size of their nose are considered good candidates for the surgery.
What’s the Difference Between Traditional and Ethnic Rhinoplasty?
- Traditional rhinoplasty is the more common type of nose surgery and is designed to create a nose that is in proportion to the face and looks natural. Ethnic rhinoplasty, on the other hand, is specifically tailored to the unique characteristics of different ethnic groups, such as African American, Asian, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern faces, so that the final result appears natural and fits the individual’s specific ethnic background. This type of rhinoplasty takes into account the unique characteristics of the patient’s skin type, facial structure, and ethnic background.
Reconstructive & Cosmetic Male Rhinoplasty
- Male rhinoplasty is similar to female rhinoplasty, but there are some differences in the approach. Men typically have thicker skin and a more defined nasal bridge, so the surgeon may need to use different techniques to achieve the desired result. Reconstructive rhinoplasty is typically performed to correct a deformity or injury, such as a broken nose, while cosmetic rhinoplasty is done to improve the appearance of the nose. This can include reducing the size of the nose, reshaping the tip or bridge, or altering the angle between the nose and the upper lip.
Healing Process?
After the surgery, the patient will have a splint and bandages on their nose to help the new shape heal properly. There may be some swelling and bruising around the eyes, but this usually subsides within the first week. The patient should avoid strenuous activity, blowing their nose, and wearing glasses for at least a week. They may be able to return to work and normal activities within a week, but it may take several months for the final result to be visible. The patient will have follow-up appointments with the surgeon to ensure proper healing and to address any concerns. It’s important to note that rhinoplasty results can take several months to be fully apparent and the final result may not be apparent until the swelling has completely subsided.
