Abdominoplasty

What is Abdominoplasty and what are its goals?

  • Abdominoplasty, also known as a “tummy tuck,” is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen, and in some cases, the tightening of the abdominal muscles. The procedure is designed to create a flatter and more toned abdominal area. The goal of the procedure is to address issues such as excess skin and fat, stretched abdominal muscles, and stretch marks caused by pregnancy or weight loss.

Who is a good candidate for Abdominoplasty?

  • Abdominoplasty is typically recommended for individuals who are in good general health and have a stable weight. It is also commonly performed on individuals who have recently lost a significant amount of weight, individuals who have had multiple pregnancies, or those who have experienced significant weight gain and have stretched abdominal muscles. Patients should have realistic expectations and understand that the procedure will not eliminate stretch marks or other scars, nor will it prevent future weight gain or pregnancy.

What does the Abdominoplasty procedure involve?

  • The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and can take two to five hours to complete, depending on the extent of the surgery. During the procedure, the surgeon will make an incision in the lower abdomen, typically extending from hip to hip, just above the pubic area. The skin and fat are then lifted off the abdominal wall, and the abdominal muscles are tightened if necessary. The excess skin and fat are then removed, and the remaining skin is pulled down and stitched together to create a smooth, tight appearance.

What are the risks and complications associated with Abdominoplasty?

  • As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and complications associated with Abdominoplasty. These may include infection, bleeding, and blood clots. There may also be risks associated with the anesthesia used during the procedure. The risk of complications can be minimized by choosing a qualified and experienced surgeon, and by following all pre- and post-operative instructions.

What can I expect during the recovery period and what are the results?

  • Recovery time varies, but most patients can return to work and normal activities within two to four weeks. Bruising, swelling, and some pain are common during the recovery period, but these symptoms can be managed with medication. Most patients will see the final results of their surgery within a few months, although it may take up to a year for the swelling to completely subside. It’s important to note that results may vary depending on the individual and the extent of the procedure.
